Pyeongchang 2018

The 23rd Olympic Winter Games will be held in Pyeongchang, South Kores. The host city was chosen in 2011 whilst competing against Munich and Annecy. Pyeongchang had already bid twice before the 2011 election. It will be the second time that the Olympics are held in South Korea. We can all still remember Seoul 1988.

Meanwhile the construction of the high speed rail between the capital Seoul and Pyeongchang has already begun. At first the opening and closing ceremonies would be held in the Ski Stadium, but it became apparent that this venue was not suitable for these shows. In 2012 the IOC required the organising committee to hold the Ceremonies in the town of Gowon, nearby Pyeongchang. That'll fit, as there's space for 50000 spectators.

The Olympic Winter Games 2018 in Pyeongchang are scheduled from 9 until 25 February 2018. During these weeks athletes will compete in 15 different sports and 98 disciplines.

New eventsin Pyeongchang 2018

The IOC has decided to include the mass start in the Olympic program. The skating event will be held at the upcoming Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang in 2018. The song was on the program of the World Championship distances in Heerenveen for the first time in 2013. Which
led to two gold medals for the Netherlands. Arjan Stroetinga was the best in the men and Irene Schouten won in the women.

In addition to the mass start, the big air in snowboarding, mixed doubles in curling and the Nations Cup in skiing have also been added. The parallel slalom in snowboarding has been eliminated.
